The Duke Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics (CERT) conducts research and education to advance the optimal use of and improve outcomes associated with cardiovascular-based therapeutics. Its emphasis on combining data from numerous sources – registries, Medicare data, and administrative datasets - allows for the identification of gaps in care in contemporary clinical practice, and assessment of the safety and comparative effectiveness of therapies for cardiovascular conditions. These data are then used to facilitate the translation of evidence-based research through provider-led quality improvement efforts  to enhance outcomes.

Researchers at the Duke CERT are exploring four highly prevalent and costly disease states, including atrial fibrillation, acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, and hypertension, with the following objectives:

  • Create national platforms for studying atrial fibrillation, acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, and hypertension.

  • Use these platforms to conduct comparative effectiveness and safety studies that address existing and emerging cardiovascular therapeutic issues.

  • Evaluate novel implementation strategies to help patients and providers use cardiovascular therapeutics more effectively, safely, and efficiently.

  • Work with medical societies, government, and other partners to disseminate those interventions found to be most effective.

  • Collaborate with others to advance methodology, carry out research with other CERT programs, and train the next generation of outcomes researchers.
